Mary's Corner Is Always Open! This week in Mary's Corner we are picking up in the book of John Chapter 1 verse9-13. These verses read “John 1:9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. John 1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: John 1:13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” John is explaining the nature of the new situation that is now in effect between God and Man, When John says that Jesus was the true light that gives light to every man, he is helping us to understand that there is no true life, for anyone, without Jesus. At that time this was a new concept. Before this the Jews were the ones waiting for their messiah, and that is what he refers to when John says in verse 11 that “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” Right before this statement John establishes that Jesus is the Messiah that the Jews had been waiting for by what he said in verse 10, “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.” By saying that the world was made through Him, it shows that Jesus was there from the creation of the world. Not only that, but it was through Jesus that the world was made, Jesus was an agent of creation. This theme is repeated again here, as it was brought up in the beginning of the chapter when John called Jesus “The Word” and one possible translation would be that Jesus is an agent of creation. (For a more elaborate explanation refer to Mary’s Corner 1.) To sum it up, John is setting up the new situation for the reader. To paraphrase, John is showing us that Jesus is without a doubt God, they are one and the same. God came in human form to His own chosen people, the Jews. They did not receive Him. But this brought about the most wonderful outcome, as it says in verse 12 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:” Now, the plan of salvation has been opened up to ANY who would receive Him. So to any who believe in His name, and this means that to any who would trust in, rely on and cling to Jesus, to any who meet this criteria, we have the right to become children of God. This is good news. The final verse for the day, these people are the ones “who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” This means that you don't have to have any special heritage, and you don't have to rely on the will of yourself or any other person to ensure your place in heaven. But your salvation depends entirely on God. The thing that is so great about this is that God is willing. It is His will that none would perish and salvation comes not by the might or power of man, but by Gods spirit. So if you are reading this now and thinking that you have always thought that somehow you would have to be strong enough, or good enough or even that you were born into a certain religion I want you to know that God cares about NONE of that. It is not by your strength, but by His, that you will receive his spirit and be borne again, becoming His child. If this is something you want, pray, talk to god about it. Ask forgiveness for anything that you think has been keeping you from committing your life to him, and receive his spirit. Read his word and get plugged in to a great church. Shoot us an e mail if you need any further help with this, we would love to help. God bless and have a wonderful week.
